Loved how it was focused on the original cast, loved how they returned in a way that felt smooth and not contrived. How they worked a very dramatic storyline without giving in to the temptation to make it melodramatic. This was definitely for the longtime fans. What we learned - Doug and Carol are still together, the girls don't like spelling tests, Carol is now a transplant coordinator, Reese is 13, Benton and Cleo are still together, so are Carter's parents. Kem didn't show up but Benton at least convinced Carter to TELL HER about the kidney transplant. Best moments - Benton teasing Carter with the peanut butter energy bar when he was waiting for surgery.

Loved it all. Now I have a conundrum. Since nobody mentioned Luka at all, should I be convinced that he won't make an appearance, or should I interpret that as a coded message that he'll be back? It felt like old times when ER was at its best. George, Julianna, Noah, and Eriq were in top form in their old characters. I felt they did not miss a step. The stories with the new and old characters blended vastly well together. This was one of the best episodes of ER in a long time. I loved seeing all of the old gang back with the new gang. Wells did a good job writing and directing the episode. I enjoyed it. I still adore my Neela. So I'm especially eager to see her farewell episode next week.

But I'm looking forward to staring cross-eyed at my computer and trying to understand what's going on as I wallow in my misery. Edit: Okay, so surfthechannel has saved the day, as usual. Great episode all around - had that...well...old-timey feel. All the old gang stepped into their roles effortlessly, which was a testament to their skill. Susan Sarandon was good, but not Emmy-worthy; not only did she not have a large enough part, but it's a part that's been done equally well by unknowns on ER for fifteen years. Trunkfish, the whole bit with Doug and mentioning old staff was problematic, anyhow, since Neela DID know Susan and Sam would have known that if Doug didn't know Abby, he couldn't have known Pratt. Highlight of course Doug and Carol and Benton and Carter...I was never a huge Doug and Carol fan but I do appreciate the fact that they never got the merged name of love treatment...total CLASS!! Besides Luka and Abby my favorite couple was Benton and Carter!!! I absolutely loved them, seeing them slide back into their old relationship was wonderful. I love Carter when he is with Benton, suddenly sulky Carter transformed into the Carter I loved from years ago. Benton was never one to overtly show he care but his actions always spoke louder than words. I know Carter and Kem are not popular but I loved them and hope they can work it out....plus that means my Luby are safe for ALL ETERNITY!!! Oh and BTW Maura wubs Luby!! teehee!!

Next was Fox, followed by NBC and the CW. But NBC's soon-to-conclude ER got a boost from the one-shot returns of former cast members George Clooney, Julianna Margulies and Eriq La Salle. ER rose to a first-place 7.6 rating/13 share in the overnights at 10 p.m., inching past CBS' normally overnight dominant Eleventh Hour (7.5/12) by one-tenth of a rating point, and building from lead-in 30 Rock (#4: 4.2/ 6 at 9:30 p.m.) by a hefty 81 percent. While this still pales in comparisons to those 20+ rated days of its heyday, it is still a positive to make note of. Even so, had NBC promoted Clooney's return (why didn't it?) the results might have been better. Since nobody mentioned Luka at all, should I be convinced that he won't make an appearance, or should I interpret that as a coded message that he'll be back? From zap2it: At 10 p.m., CBS' "Eleventh Hour" grabbed the most viewers with a 7.4/12, but "ER," 6.9/12, led the 18-49 demo and snagged its biggest audience of the season. I've heard complaints elsewhere from people who didn't like that the Carol, Doug and Benton didn't come back to County. I thought though that their story lines fit in a lot better this way. It just seems silly for all the docs to randomly walk through County doors. Of course I really enjoyed Carol and Doug's storyline as well as Carter and Benton's. I like Carter so much better when he's interacting with the old timers. I didn't really care about what was going on at County. I was SO glad that they didn't pull a "Oh no we grabbed the wrong igloo with an organ in it!" for the transplants because the way they kept focusing on the matching coolers made me a bit worried. As for why Doug, Sam and Neela couldn't come up with a common name, and how Carol didn't learn the kidney went to Carter in the end, I almost feel like the writers just wanted to leave it anonymous. It kind of gave the show a whole, Fievel goes west "It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky" sort of feel. And yes, I totally turned into a 13 year old little fangirl in the last thirty seconds. Especially when they played the "Doug and Carol" music. Loved it. -Sarah

With all of the horrific surgical accidents in the last few years, like amputating the wrong limb, I thought that a checklist would be required and routine. I'll remember that if I ever need surgery. I think that Neela will figure out that Carter got the Seattle kidney in another episode. I laughed at Carol's "some doctor" remark.

I vaguely remember Doug, back from when my mom used to watch the show -on T.V. - and I used to hate it (hey, I was like 9, what did I know?!) but I actually managed to see him and not Clooney. It felt nice. And, about Sam and Neela asking about Abby and Pratt....we know that if Doug didn't know who Abby was, he couldn't possibly have met Pratt, but both Neela and Sam were introduced in S10, so it's possible that they never asked neither Abby nor Greg how long they've been working there. And, for all they know, Doug might've left a year before they got there... Anyway...I'm jealous. I really am. Maybe because I feel closer to the second cast (I call the original six the first cast, those from S7-S11 -Luka, Abby, Carter, Susan, Chen, Pratt, Weaver - considering the friendships - the second cast and these guys that came on the show starting with S10 the third one), maybe because I missed the early days, but I always loved Luka and Carter together. Seeing him with Benton...I just feel cheated...Peter doesn't even know Kem. It was because of Luka that Carter met her. And the carbyholic type of behaviour can go on an on ...) For the 10,678 time...I'm really going to miss this show. They should've made it suck in the end, so that people wouldn't regret it so much...

I adore Carter with Benton--the relationship which sparked a billion slash fics It truly was like old times. As for Carter--he didn't tell Kem, and he didn't tell his folks, either? So if he had died, that would have really showed them! Oy. Loved how Doug and Carol were worked into the show. I was afraid it would be OTT, or forced, but it was neither. Susan Sarandon was wonderful, too. As for the County patients--not really caring about the abandoned baby--sorry, cute little guy. The MS story hit close to home--my step=mother just passed away from MS this past November. It's a nasty disease--it takes away your body, slowly paralyzing muscle until it hits the diaphram (in my step-mom's case, at least, the end came very suddenly). It was cool to have Ernest Borgnine stop by--lots of Oscar power last night (and it showed.) Of all the newbies flung at us at the start of the season, why has Daria been the only one to stick?

In real life, people who worked closely together for a long time lose touch with each other when they drift off to other jobs, that is just the way it is. Made total sense to me that Doug didn't even think of Carter. The episode had a nice feel to it. I have to say that, while I have no problem with the performances turned in by either Susan Sarandon or Ernest Borgnine, neither part really called for that sort of star power. I have always liked the way ER brought in talented non-stars and got memorable moments out of them. Stunt-casting for the sake of it annoys me. "I have some good news." Right. She doesn't even know you needed a kidney transplant and you're going to expect her to be thrilled you got one. There are a couple of stages she's going to have to go through before she goes "Yipee!" over this, you dimbulb.
