Among them is Noah Wyle, whose saintly doc Carter arrives from Darfur with both his marriage and his only remaining kidney failing. "This story line is going to bring Eriq La Salle back and tangentially, Julianna Marguiles," says exec producer David Zabel. (We hear George Clooney also plays a part in Carter's story, as does guest Susan Sarandon.) "I get to play a lot with Eriq," reveals Wyle. "Dr. Benton just happens to be on staff at the hospital where I'm having dialysis." Maura Tierney also makes a cameo visit. Says Zabel, "There will be a lot of great stories and great moments." Posts: 699 (02/25/09 10:51 AM) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I expect Clooney to move the needle when he finally shows up and I also think that, even w/out Clooney, the series finale can expect pretty good ratings. But viewers seem to be hanging back for now, waiting for those last couple of episodes. I would imagine TPTB hoped that the periodic return of old cast members would create some building excitement as the series neared the end, but that doesn't seem to be happening. If anything, the nostalgia may have undercut the current season by seeming to acknowledge that the show's best days are long past. IMHO (what do you think NBC will pay me for it?) they not only need to promote Clooney but get back to some good old-fashioned storytelling and build a compelling plot line over the next few weeks to set up Clooney's return. Otherwise, even that might fizzle a bit. They have a chance to build a homecoming story around NW, since he'll be in more than one episode, but I must say Carter's ailing kidney and marriage--which are essentially personal problems--do not seem to require an extended cast reunion. That's why I was speculating about Carter recruiting old friends to continue his mission in Africa--however, TPTB almost never listen to me.

Posts: 705 (02/25/09 12:27 PM) More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	As all of my "fantasy" finales are either impossible due to arcs and casting changes or completely lacking in the reality of TPTB's sadism, I am left to speculate drearily. I don't think Carter will die. Not after fifteen years. And I don't think they'll go anywhere further than Boston or Seattle for storylines. I do think that Carter will complete the circle in the end, though - Banfield will leave to care for the baby I'm assuming she adopts, and Carter will become chief, not only having tied up the end and beginning, but giving him a grand sense of entitlement. Because as much as Carter irks me, he is one of the vital organs of this show (that's a renal failure joke, there). I daresay he sets the tone. I have a feeling that at least some of the returning cast will be back to celebrate the opening of the Joshua Carter center - I would venture a guess that it's why Abby and her boy-toy return, perhaps Susan, as well. Then again, Lil' Susie's nearly old enough for college, give or take a few years of good old-fashioned ER time warping, so maybe she's got her aunt along. As for Doug, I can see him setting up some program for underprivelaged and/or terminally ill children and having some ties, financial or otherwise, to Chicago. Maybe even a partner program with County. I think we all know that Sam and Gates will wander off into a sewer somewhere, together at last, and Neela will probably end up with Leg-O-Less.

We may have to see his feet up on the desk after all. Or, he gets Sam pregnant and takes her back to Africa to surprise Kem.

Stringfield played Dr. Susan Lewis on NBC's medical drama from 1994-1996 and then returned to the show in 2001 for another four seasons. Too bad MT's cameo seems to be linked to his illness, as it makes the prospect of seeing GV return less likely.

Luka and Abby were with Carter when his baby died ( in the waiting room) maybe they will pay a visit. Friends showing support, After all Carter was apparently still emailing with Luka a few seasons ago. I hope!!! I do not recall TPTB announicng Goran's cameo on The Book of Abby, did they??? so I will hope for the best a loving Luka cameo. The last minute call for an additional three shows, Wells explains, "allowed me to do in the finale something which I had originally thought of doing but wouldn't have been able to do if we hadn't gotten the extension." It also gave him the opportunity to expand several storylines including those of love-torn Neela (Parminder Nagra) and the returning Carter (Noah Wyle). The producer, whose cop show Southland takes over ER's long held Thursday night slot on NBC, says he decided to thread such returning actors as George Clooney, Juliana Margulies and Eriq La Salle through the final season rather than shoehorn them into the finale. "We've had characters coming back throughout the year for stories that make sense," he says. "The way you actually bump into people in your real life who you haven't seen for a while but used to know well." The episode featuring Clooney and Margulies' return is set to air March 12, and will guest-star Susan Sarandon as a woman dealing with a tragedy involving her grandson. =============== Hmm, I'm thinking tragedy + Ross and Hathaway meet Neela and Sam = the transplants for Carter and Lucy's mom come from Seattle.
